About The Wall

Right Image

The Palestinian territory has been profoundly affected by the construction of the separation wall and the extensive buffer zones surrounding it. This formidable barrier has resulted in the isolation of Palestinians from their workplaces, farmlands, medical facilities, educational institutions, places of worship, and even their own families. In its initial phase, the construction led to the uprooting of an astonishing 100,000 trees, the destruction of 35,000 meters of irrigation networks, and posed significant challenges for 75% of teachers and students in these regions in accessing schools. The projected length of this barrier spans approximately 720 kilometers (450 miles), impacting around 943,000 dunams (235,750 acres) of land. The construction entails a substantial cost of $1.6 million per kilometer, making the entire project estimated to exceed one billion U.S. dollars, exclusive of expenses related to confiscated or destroyed Palestinian property. On July 9, 2004, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an advisory opinion, denouncing the wall as a breach of international law and calling for its dismantlement, alongside reparations to be made by Israel for all damages incurred during its construction.

Our Mission

We aim to raise awareness about the consequences of the separation wall, not just within the local community but also on a global scale. Through our unique initiative of transforming the wall into candles, we offer individuals from all walks of life an opportunity to symbolically contribute to the dismantling of this divisive structure. Each candle holds within it the hopes, dreams, and stories of Palestinians living behind the wall. Our mission is to amplify these voices, to ensure their stories are heard far and wide.

Why Candles?

Right Image

Candles are a universal symbol of hope, light, and remembrance. They transcend language and culture, speaking to the human spirit in a way that words alone cannot. By turning the wall into candles, we harness the silent but profound power of this symbol to convey a message of solidarity and transformation. When you light one of our candles, you are not just illuminating a physical space; you are also shedding light on the issues of injustice and separation. Each candle carries with it a story, a testament, prepared by Palestinians living behind the wall. These statues may represent a student on their way to school, a sick person making it to the hospital, or a Palestinian exercising their right to visit the holy sites of Jerusalem for worship. Candles are silent, yet they possess a profound power. We extend an invitation to all to join us in educating the world about the separation wall and its profound impact on our people, particularly the residents of Jerusalem.
